A cold hardy fast growing small to medium sized round-domed tree that grows 18m (59ft) by 10m (32ft). Dense with variable shiny dark green leaves. PLant is self fertile. Produces abundant white pinkish or purple violet berries much loved by birds in June and July. Originally imported as food for silkworms. Native to northern China.
The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy), and heavy (clay) well drained soil.
Can tolerate drought and strong winds but not maritime exposure

Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours, repeat process daily for 4 days.
Stratification: cold stratify for 90 days.
Germination: surface sow and keep moist, tamp the soil, keep moist, mulch the seed bed, can be sown outdoors in the fall for spring germination.
